4th big cat

So, back to friendlier faces (not black jags!).  Here's 1 of 2 big cats that roam the Americas, even in my own "backyard", so I'm staying an Indoor Kitty - you never know what's waiting to pounce (hehe, me!)

This little girl looks like she could use a friend.
I like her dimples.

I wish that Mama would be a little more careful - little guy doesn't look too happy.
Jaguars live in South America and are bigger than cougars, but I think cougars are much more handsome/pretty.  Jaguars and Cougars are also cars - I still don't understand that part.

  1. Oops, 5th big cat! Guess there are a lot, 'cause I'm not even half done.

  2. Funny, I never thought about them being cars before! Good observation, Hans. I definitely agree with you that Mountain Lions/Cougars are possibly the prettiest of the big cats, even though they're kinda shrimpy in the "big cat" family. They're very strong, stealthy, and have maybe the best night vision of any cat. They're almost impossible to spot even if you're within yards of them, so it's best to make a bit of noise to keep them at a distance and let them know you're coming through. They would prefer NOT to encounter humans (little house cats might be a different matter!), but they are not afraid of much at all and will defend themselves if necessary, against anything. They've even attacked grizzly bears (and lost, of course, but still) who have threatened their cubs. They are truly brave, but also gorgeous and regal looking. I always want to pet them because their coat look really soft, like a plush doll's.

I'm pretty much a tiger guy, but snow leopards and cougars are pretty close to the top of the list too when it comes to majestic or just pretty big cats.

Of course when it comes to little cats, you take the cake, Hansel!

  3. P.S. They seem to be the only cat with a plain, tawny coat, with white highlights. All the others have spots, stripes, or some kind of camouflage markings, even the panthers, which you can see in the sun. Maybe Cougars are adapted to the long, straw-colored grassy plains of Western America? I don't know, but they always look like big housecats to me. Very pretty, though I wouldn't go try to pet a wild one.

I saw a video where someone had a mountain lion who was raised entirely in captivity and was the sweetest thing. The owner/trainer brought her to all the local nursing homes, to cheer up the bored residents there. Some were initially afraid, but this cat was so gentle it would lick there outstretched hands, accept snacks, chase nerf balls, and even just sit patiently with some of the less functional people, with her head on their laps. It was very sweet.

  5. Cats are surely beautiful and I understand your fascination with them since you are one, but how about a dog once in a while, since one of your good friends is a dog.

  7. Your wishes will be granted. Thanks for your comments. As far as the lack of markings on cougars, I agree it's because they don't live in a jungle, they need to blend in with tawny boulders & light colored hills. More to come...

  8. You used "tawny boulders" in a sentence! Your prize? A Dewey Button!
